Popcorn, Candy, and Evan Almighty...

With the new release of Evan Almighty, I've been tossing the idea of entertainment around. The movie seems to be innocent, but since it covers biblical territory I ask myself, should we be entertained in this manner? I watched Bruce Almighty, and felt there were parts that were slightly over the top. It doesn't surprise me considering Jim Carey had the leading role. Is it just me, or does anyone else feel like humor at the expense of the bible seems to be sacrilegious? Don't get me wrong. I totally love a good laugh and I still want to see Evan Almighty, but part of me feels uneasy about using Noah's Ark as a joke. I basically feel torn about watching a comedy and respecting God. I'm sure they kept a moral point to the story, though I've only seen a few previews. With Bruce Almighty, I felt as though their main point was "it's rough being God" and "have a little patience with prayers." Now, was it worth seeing to reach these conclusions, maybe. Tell me what your thoughts are on movies with "God Comedy" and specifically these two movies. You can also review Evan Almighty if you've seen it. I just may watch it to post a review.

hey, u should read my blog, i jus wrote a little review bout it. it wasnt over the top like Bruce Almighty was. I think both were really good tho, i believe God has a sense of humour and Evan Almighty is a good way of seeing that, i dont think it was sacreligious at all. Like you said i didnt agree with a few things in Bruce Almighty but overall it had a good moral...it shows how amazing God is that he can take care of everyones prayers and needs and that we are just men.

Thanks for the comment! I will definitely check out your blog. I'm happy to see another perspective and may indeed go see the movie. I'll have to post something once I do. :-)

Hey,

I have seen and enjoyed both movies. I felt both movies had surprisingly good messages, even if hollywood may make feeble attempts at interpreting the Bible.
I felt that Bruce Almighty's message was complete surrender. Bruce did not surrender his life to the will of God until he came to a breaking point in his life(seen at the end of the movie). He even said it in the script. Evan Almighty's message was sometimes God has other plans for your life than you do. What happened to Evan was a direct answer to prayer from his wife - he was loosing sight of what was important in life, and God put it in perspective for him. Evan Almighty was definitely more of a family/kids movie than Bruce Almighty. I agree with Lenny - God does have a sense of humor! I think that they captured that in both movies in respectful ways. I think any attempt by Hollywood to understand the things of God is a great ministry opportunity for the Lord to speak to their hearts. I hope that they were ministered to in their searching!
